Stellenbosch’s iconic oak-lined streets lie only 50km northwest of Cape Town. This district is home to some of the best vineyards in the country (often non-irrigated), producing superb red wines from the granite hillsides of Simonsberg and the Helderberg region, near False Bay. The equally remarkable whites are grown mainly in the west, on the sandstone soils of Table Mountain. On the outskirts of Stellenbosch, founded in 1692, Neethlingshof stands out as a monument of wine estates, arguably the oldest and largest in the Western Cape.
