Two hundred years ago, in 1818, Madame Clicquot created the very first blended rose in the champagne region. she broke with the accepted practice of using an elderberry-based preparation to color the wine and instead blended some of her fine bouzy red wine with her classic champagne. the result was the first blended rose, the veuve clicquot rose. once more, madame clicquot was leading the way and changing the rules.

When her husband died in 1805, Madame Clicquot was left with a difficult decision. She made an auspicious choice that would forever change her life – and the history of Champagne. In 1816, she invented the riddling table – a process still used today! – which ensures a crystal-clear wine. In 1818, she created the first rosé d’assemblage, by blending some of her beloved Pinot Noir red wines from Bouzy with her still white wines. While her life may have been marked by surprise, these innovations were anything but accidental: they were born from her impeccable taste, zest for life, and passion for excellence.
